“Ah, Margo, isn’t it? I got your message, but I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it,” Dr. Harrison said as Margo took a seat in the chair opposite him.

She waited until he was settled back in his chair behind the large desk before she spoke. “I thought my message was pretty clear.”

“You said you wanted to talk about your childhood. Is that right?”

She laughed. “You can pretend to misunderstand all you want, but the fact that you cleared space in your schedule for me immediately tells me otherwise.”

The message she’d sent had been fairly straightforward. Thirty years ago you allowed me to be adopted by an agency that doesn’t officially exist. Let’s talk.

“My employees are my family. I never married, never had children of my own. My employees matter to me, maybe too much. I never turn down a request for an appointment.”

“Really? That’s very good of you.”

He shrugged. “As I said, I regard everyone here as family.”

“Tell me about the agency adoption program.”

“It’s an urban legend. It’s true that there were issues in the early days of the procedure. Babies were created by couples or individuals who maybe didn’t fully understand the significance of what they were doing, didn’t fully realize that they were creating a baby, not just taking part in a science experiment.”

“What did you do with those abandoned babies, then?”

“I prefer to think of them as temporarily unclaimed rather than abandoned.”

“Whatever you want to call them, what did you do with them?”

“Happily, we were able to find homes for every child. Babies are always in demand. No matter how much we advance the science of fertility, there are always going to be people who need or prefer to adopt.”

“And the government agency?”

“A myth, as I said. We gave our babies good homes, with mothers and/or fathers.”

“You’re lying,” she said conversationally.

“I can assure you, I’m not.”

“Then someone on your staff lied to you.”

“Impossible, especially all those years ago. We were a much smaller operation in those days. Every member of staff was devoted to his or her job and we worked a team.”

“And yet, I was adopted by a intergovernmental agency that officially does not exist. How do you explain that?”

“I’m sorry, but I have to assume that you’ve been misinformed.”

“Really? That’s an interesting answer. I’m going to assume the agency suggested that answer.”

He smiled. “What do you really want?”

“At some point, probably while I was still in my pod, someone at this clinic allowed me to be adopted by an agency that wanted a group of agents it could train from birth to be the best espionage agents the world has ever seen. Thanks to someone here, I never had a mother or a father. I never had brothers or sisters. I never got to celebrate Christmas or my birthday or any other holiday. Our training started in the nursery. We learned the alphabet in ten different languages at the same time. There were no rewards for good behavior, there was only more training.”

Dr. Harrison held up a hand.
